Create fun clay keepsake boxes to store jewelry, trinkets, and treasures. These are made out of air-hardening clay and shaped like sunflowers and butterflies. They are lots of fun for kids to make.
You will need:
- Air-hardening clay
- Paints
- Water
- Paintbrush
Optional:
- Cookie Cutters
- Rolling Pin

To make the base of the clay pot or box take some clay and roll it into a ball. With your thumb press down in the middle and begin to shape. Once you are happy with the size and shape set it aside to dry.
To make the lid take some clay and flatten out you can use your hands or a rolling pin. You can use cookie cutters to make the shape of the lid or shape it with your fingers. Make sure the lid fits the base.
For the Sunflower make a flower shaped lid then make a small clay circle. Take the end of a small paintbrush and make some indents into the clay circle. Next take the paintbrush and brush water onto the back of the circle to attach it to the center of the flower. Set it aside to dry.
For the butterfly make a circle lid to fit the base. Next make a butterfly shape and slightly bend the wings up. Attach the butterfly to the circle lid with a little water and let dry.

Once all the pieces are dry (mine took about 24 hours) you are ready to paint.
