Types of Child Play: Creation Station Art Table
Playtime, an important part of learning, is the time when kids discover many new things. Through play, kids build skills, learn to solve problems, and find creative ways in overcoming physical and mental challenges.
There are six types of play namely:
- Active Play, which focuses on kids’ physical activities and movements, like playing ball, playing with sand and water, and biking.
- Cooperative Play, where kids play with a group of friends, like board games, basketball, hide and seek.
- Creative Play, where kids explore their imagination, in the form of arts and crafts, like drawing, painting, dancing, and playing with clay.
- Dramatic Play, which involves make believe, like assuming different real and fictional roles and creating scenarios.
- Manipulative Play, where kids use hand-eye coordination and motor skills, like paper craft, coloring, and cutting with scissors.
- Quiet Play, which provides kids the opportunity to think and reason, like reading picture books, coloring with crayons, solving puzzles and stringing beans.
Play is like a learning block, giving kids valuable lessons needed to face the outside world. Simple play stimulates the imagination, creativity and the ability to think outside the box.
As kids grow up, they explore their imagination. They express their creativity through arts, crafts and play. Nurture your kids’ creativity—their window of self-expression.
Kids have their own and unique way of showing their creativity. Be there with them—boost their self-confidence and self-expression, as they go through different experiences in creative play. Enhance your kids’ learning by giving them enough time to enjoy and discover the things around them. Do not force them into doing tasks that they are not interested in. Better yet, encourage them to choose creative activities that interest them the most, be it in arts, crafts, dancing, drawing, painting, and many others.
Provide an environment that is comfortable, carefree, and safe. Let them experiment—this is part of their creative play. The process of creative play is equally, or even more important than the end result. Let them explore through different materials in their arts and craft. There are crayons, beads, water colors, clays, cloth, and popsicle sticks. They may be interested in singing, dancing, drawing. Guide them if they ask for your help. Accompany them should you decide that they get special lessons.
For each creative outcome, show your appreciation. Praise your child for a making a lovely sketch, creating a fish out of clay, building a house with popsicle sticks, for creating unique dance steps, and so on and so forth. There are lots and lots of possibilities in creativity. Tell your child that you are proud of them every day.
